World Press Photo Exhibition 2021

This year also, Athens Photo World presents the World Press Photo 2021 exhibition at the SNFCC, with the photos that were distinguished in the annual international contest of photojournalism and documentary photography for highlighting the most important snapshots and stories of the year past. This year, 4,315 photographers from 130 countries participated with 74,470 photos. The final selection brought to view 45 photographers from 28 countries, whose work is presented in the exhibition. Winner of the World Press Photo of the Year 2021 is the Danish photographer Mads Nissen of the Panos Pictures agency with the photo of 85-year-old Rosa Luzia Runaldi as she is embraced by the nurse Adriana Silva de Costa Souza at the Viva Bem care home in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Nissen’s fellow nominees were Evelyn Hockstein (USA), Oleg Ponomarev (Russia), Luis Tato (Spain), Lorenzo Tugnoli (Italy) and Valery Melnikov (Russia).
Winner of the World Press Photo Story of the Year is the Italian Antonio Faccilongo of the Getty agency with his photographic theme “Habibi”. His fellow nominees were Canadian Chris Donovan and Russian Valery Melnikov (Russia).
Distinction for Greek Photojournalism with the 3rd Prize for Angelos Tzortzinis and his work “Trapped in Greece” in the Long Term Projects category.
The exhibition is brought to Greece by the SNF’s Grant to APW and will be presented in August on the ground floor of the National Library of Greece, at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC). The exhibition will open on August 23rd and will last until September 14th.
