Athens Photo World (APW) – after its successful launch in June 2019 – returns from 22 to 31 May 2020, with a series of exhibitions and events that aim to bring contemporary photojournalism closer to the public.
This year, APW – with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) as the lead donor – is also investing in the idea of open digital projections in central locations in Athens. Aiming at promoting the work of contemporary photojournalists in our country, APW will organize a show with all the portfolios selected at an outdoor cinema in central Athens (TBA). For two evenings, on 25 and 26 May, all selected photography portfolios will be presented in open screenings, with the participation of guest photographers and audience discussion.
Continuing last year’s collaboration with the Technopolis City of Athens, the APW digital projections will be also presented at Technopolis’ venues, at a spot visible by all its visitors.
The theme of the 2020 digital projections is open, to cover topics from global news and daily life. As 2020 is a “sports year” with the Tokyo Olympic Games and the European Football Championship, entries with a sports theme are strongly encouraged.
Sports is an important chapter of modern reality, including the popular playing fields and championships as well as simple ways of entertaining and socialising. Images that capture joy, effort, sportsmanship, reward but also excitement, celebrations and the team spirit that is cultivated and encouraged in sports – s from the sandlots and improvised arenas to the largest stadiums and the most glamorous world events. Sports and its social dimensions will be an important theme of the Athens Photo World 2020.
The final selection will include a total of twenty (20) portfolios, with 20 photos each.
Those interested are invited to submit a portfolio of 20 photographs, an explanatory text and a brief resume.
